Imagining a world without racism

I went to a workshop this weekend about challenging racism, at the GRC13. As an exercise, each of us was asked to speak for 5 minutes about what our world would look like without racism.

I realized that as a consequence of spending my entire life in a world with racism, I've never envisioned a world without racism. It was mindblowing. Here are some of the first things that came to my mind:

* We'd hear more languages and see more styles of dress.

* We'd learn more ways of doing things. The Peace Corps could send people to foreign countries to learn, instead of just to teach.

* Maybe white people would even start to celebrate being white, because whiteness would be associated with something other than oppression.

* We'd be way more productive, because people would do things more based on what they wanted to do or what they were good at, and less based on what they were expected to do or permitted to do by those in charge.

* We could take all the energy that's going into fighting racism and use it to fight sexism, and ableism, and homophobia, and religious discrimination, and ageism, and more.

The list goes on and on... what would *your* world look like without racism?

Hello, world!

I have a livejournal now!

I've been feeling inspired to write lately, and I figure having people to read stuff will inspire me to write stuff. I think I'm going to use my lj more for sending random thoughts to friends, and less for reporting on my life.

In that spirit, I just finished writing a document for my buddies at the Prometheus Radio Project, and I could use some feedback on it. It's a 3-page intro to sound and audio for people with no background on the topic, posted here as a pdf for now: http://web.mit.edu/avenerm/www/audio_basics.pdf. It's intended to be a companion to this document: http://prometheusradio.org/tech_support/articles_and_documents/basic_electronics.html.

So, if you feel like giving it a read, I could use suggestions for small-scale content and wording changes. Mainly, I'm concerned about making sure it makes sense to someone who has never thought about sine waves, fourier transforms, etc.

Thanks, yo!
